Outdoor Investor Day 2024: A2A meets italian and international financial community at the hydroelectric plants in Valtellina

Sondrio, July 11, 2024 - A2A CEO Renato Mazzoncini welcomed today some representatives of the Italian and international financial community at the Group's hydroelectric plants in Valtellina during the Outdoor Investor Day 2024. During the event, analysts and institutional investors visited strategic infrastructure in the hydropower production sector, where the Company is the second national operator. In addition to the infrastructure in Lombardy, A2A manages facilities in Friuli Venezia Giulia and Calabria, for a total of 40 plants with approximately 2,000 MW of installed capacity.

The latest technological innovations related to the plants in Valtellina were presented during the meeting, with a special focus on the San Giacomo and Cancano Dams, as well as the Premadio and Grosio Power Plants.

The hydropower system of A2A in Valtellina and Valchiavenna has a long history. It started in 1910 with the Grosotto plant, which was used to generate energy for Milan. In 1927, the Mese plant entered into operation, being the most powerful in Europe at the time. Over the years, the system expanded to reach its current structure, with 10 large dams and 23 plants with a total capacity of around 1,200 MW. These include run-of-river plants, which directly utilize the flow of a watercourse, and storage/reservoir plants, which operate seasonally to allow for the scheduling of energy production downstream.

The Valchiavenna infrastructure includes 6 large dams and 12 plants with an installed capacity of 384 MW, while the Alta Valtellina includes 4 large dams and 11 plants with an installed capacity of 784 MW. Some of these are located in highly valuable natural areas, such as the Cancano and San Giacomo dams in the Fraele valley, and the Braulio plant within the Stelvio National Park, where they seamlessly integrate into the landscape thanks to projects that minimize environmental impact.

The 2024-2035 Industrial Plan, which has energy transition and circular economy as its two strategic pillars, includes investments in advanced technologies to improve the efficiency of hydropower plants, aimed at enhancing existing infrastructure and increasing flexibility to optimize water resource availability and use.

Some of these investments will be allocated to Valtellina and Valchiavenna, two historic territories for the Group, which host a significant part of A2A's hydropower park. Thanks to the favorable climatic conditions of 2023, renewable energy generation has returned to the average values of the last 10 years in the area: over 2,670 GWh were produced in total, a 38% increase compared to 2022, contributing to avoiding the emission of over 1 million tons of CO2

The documentation related to the event will be available on the Company's website today.
