Green technology for the smart cities of the future

We at A2A are constantly committed to innovation in the building of a future that brings improvements to the lives of each individual and of communities as a whole. In collaboration with AMSA, we have been trialling Trombia Free, the electric autonomous street sweeper which promises to revolutionise urban cleaning, reducing energy consumption and emissions.

We are going through critical times for the future of our planet, and our company wants to lead change. Slowing down global warming and the increase in global temperatures, developing new technologies able to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, promoting and implementing projects and processes in line with the principles of the circular economy: these are some of the tasks to which we at A2A are committed.

The project

Innovation at the service of sustainability

Innovation plays a particularly important role in achieving the strategic goals that we have set ourselves. One of the initiatives that our Group has set in motion to meet these goals has been the trialling of Trombia Free, a prototype that could become the street sweeper of the future. Autonomous and electric, it boasts unprecedented efficiency in terms of both energy savings and cleaning capability.
The project – carried out in collaboration with AMSA – is an example of sustainable innovation aimed at improving people’s lives, a key element for a Life Company like ours.

The prototype of Trombia Technologies

During the trial, which took place in the Milano Innovation District (Mind), the prototype developed by Trombia Technologies – a Finnish business based in Kuopio – demonstrated features that could prove to be extremely valuable in meeting challenges in the coming decades. The vehicle is, in fact, able to clean in one hour an area three times larger than that normally covered by currently available street sweepers and is particularly effective in the removal of both fine particles and much larger pieces of litter. And to do all of this, it uses just 15% of the energy consumed by a traditional vehicle, and fully respects the urban environment: it is very silent and safe; it detects obstacles and pedestrians thanks to advanced vision systems and image analysis algorithms based on artificial intelligence. Moreover, the Trombia Free can also be controlled in semi-autonomous mode, thus allowing an operator to take remote control of the sweeper at any time and even control more than one sweeper at the same time.
