Pallon

The project

Computer vision software for the inspection of sewage systems

In line with the 2021-2030 Business Plan, in 2021 we started making significant investments in the development of the integrated water cycle, which involves both the water supply network and the wastewater and sewerage system. In the coming years, the challenge for us will be to build increasingly safe networks without any leakage of pollutants into the environment and with users connected to more modern treatment and purification facilities.

Our encounter with Pallon was a perfect opportunity for us to make the best use of experience, vision and new technologies in the total management of the urban sewage system. Pallon is a start-up founded in 2019 by a spin-off of the Polytechnic of Zurich that develops computer vision software designed to automatically detect faults and breakages in wastewater pipelines.
The start-up’s system is able to drastically reduce analysis times with a very high degree of accuracy and to identify more than 300 types of breakage, obstruction and crack, thus providing the network management with tangible benefits. It is possible to improve maintenance and repair planning, limiting work to real needs, both in the event of emergencies – intervening rapidly and effectively – and for scheduled maintenance involving the relining or refurbishment of pipelines.

The start-up’s project embraces the essence of respect for the life cycle of the wastewater network and the intention to adopt solutions of benefit to the movement of water, with a balanced approach to improvement and a system enabling rapid action at the time of need.
