Sustainability Plan

District heating

Contribute to the reduction of the environmental impact of cities, giving special attention to air quality by implementing district heating and cooling.

Energy from non-fossil sources for district heating (TWht) 1.5 2.2 2.4 2.4

2023 figures are the baseline against which the 24-35 Plan had been calculated. Starting from 2025, annual performances will be compared to the targets to assess wether the Group is on track of the targets themselves.

Green energy – energy efficiency in end uses

Contribute to the reduction of end-user emissions through the sale of green energy and intervening on the energy efficiency of public and private real estate.

Actions 2023

  • Overall, the total installed RES capacity was 2.53 GW, accounting for 33% of the energy produced. The use of waste-to-energy allowed the production of 1.5 TWht of energy from non-fossil sources and avoided about 300,000 tons of CO2;
  • The bollett@mail services, for a total of 1,826,037 electricity and gas supply contracts, helped to reduce the use of paper and saved about 255 tons of paper;
  • In 2023, A2A Smart City was allocated funds under the PNRR and from gas providers for remote reading and remote management of water and gas meters using LoRaWAN7 technology, a network protocol for long-range connectivity of Internet of Things devices. The tenders were called by companies such as Acquedotto Lucano, GRIM Molise, ETRA, AS Retigas, Pavia Acque and BrianzaAcque (in which A2A Smart City is a supplier for Acinque). The infrastructure will enable remote reading and remote management of about 750,000 smart meters;
  • The A2A WALLBOX all-inclusive offer for businesses and individuals to supply and install a charging device for electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids remained in 2023, as did the A2A Easy Moving offer for 100% green energy for the home at the wholesale price plus an annual fixed contribution and electric car charging of up to 180 kWh per month, depending on the package chosen on the A2A E-moving App;
  • In 2023, A2A provided resources and projects to boost sustainable mobility for employees. In addition to special agreements with ATM Milan and Brescia Trasporti, A2A joined the “Mobility4Mi” project co-funded by the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security, the Municipality of Milan and the Metropolitan City to promote intermodal transportation in Milan and encourage sustainable mobility. The 35 other initiatives that were also carried out included extending corporate e-bike sharing in some of the Group's offices, upgrading bicycle parking lots and special agreements for suburban public transport in Brescia, Bergamo and Cremona.
  • The renewal of the A2A Group's car fleet continued in 2023 with a strong push on the electrification of the fleet. A corporate “Zero Emission” project was started to achieve 100 percent electric powertrains on cars and light commercial vehicles by 2030;

Actions following industrial plan

  • Launch of the company's Zero Emission project to achieve 100% electric motorization in cars and light commercial vehicles by 2030. The project is also designed to promote a cultural change towards sustainable mobility initiatives and encourage micro-mobility. The project will make it possible to bring CO2 emissions by the A2A Group's vehicle fleet almost to zero.
  • The Group is committed to decarbonizing transport and is investing around € 0.5 billion in e-mobility, which will expand the recharging network from 2,000 points in 2023 to 34,000 points in 2035.
  • To help people and companies in their energy transition, the Group aims to significantly increase its customer base from 3.5 million in 2023 to more than 5 million in 2035, with a portfolio that is increasingly focused on electrifying consumption, also because of the VAS7 and PPA8 (B2B and mass market) offerings.
