SDG 6 – Clean water and sanitation

Ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all

We have done and achieved a great deal in the sphere of the use, dispersion and quality of water.

Sustainability plan

Water

Taking action to decrease consumption in the water catchment and distribution process, reduce water loss and improve the quality of water returned to the environment.

KPI 2023 2026 2030 2035
Pipeline water losses (mc/km/day) (average) 16.7 15.3 14.1 12.8
% network districting of the A2A water cycle aqueduct 43% 50% 65% 80%

2023 figures are the baseline against which the 24-35 Plan had been calculated. Starting from 2025, annual performances will be compared to the targets to assess wether the Group is on track of the targets themselves.

Actions 2023

  • water leakage detection and reduction activities continued in 2023: 920 km of network were inspected (of which 666 km with the support of external companies and 254 km with in-house operators);
  • the Aquarius project continued, involving the installation of sensors (noise loggers) for real-time detection of the “noise” of pipe leaks, thereby changing the paradigm of the management of aqueduct networks.
  • work on the renovation and energy efficiency of facilities advanced, both for the aqueduct and for sewerage and purification;
  • work continued as planned on resolving European infractions related to the lack of sewage treatment;
  • all work on agglomerations under infraction, where not already resolved, was being resolved, completed, or in the design phase, with all infractions forecast to be completely resolved by 2027;
  • districting of the aqueduct distribution network continued: to date, 43% of the 1,392 km distribution network managed in all the Province of Brescia has been districted;
  • the quality monitoring of drinking water was implemented at  districts in the city of Brescia.

Actions following industrial plan

Thanks to an investment of €700 million by 2035, the Group is committed to significantly reducing water losses in the network to 13 m3/km/day and increasing the use of smart water meters, which will bring the managed network RAB to €1 billion;

  • The Industrial Plan includes a series of investments aimed at interconnecting the aqueducts to create a ‘collaboration’ between the supply sources and the distribution networks.
  • There are plans to monitor the quality of the drinking water in the Brescia network by installing an additional 23 district inlet measuring units and 140 capillary monitoring modules along the network between 2024 and 2026.
